Complete Guide to Remote Desktop

November 30, 2008 - 5:27pm

On the show we occassionally mention remote access products such as GoToMyPc and LogMeIn.  But out of all of them, Remote Desktop that is built into Microsoft Windows is by far the best, mainly because it is fast and free.

So I've written the "Complete Guide to Configuring and Using Windows Remote Desktop Services for Small Businesses" (and home users, too!) for users that want to setup their network to access remote desktops from anywhere.

The manual covers port forwarding for port 3389, which is the port used by Remote Desktop, setting up the Remote Desktop Server, and assigning static IPs from your ISP and the RDP Server.

I know that it might be more of an advanced topic, but some listeners (and Internet visitors will hopefully find the guide useful.

Please feel free to comment.  I've setup hundreds of these, but I might have missed something, so I plan on updating the manual as time goes on.

I will also be adding advanced information on how to configure multiple desktops on the same network using dd-wr, using IP reservations to make your life easier, and other advance topics.

Force Excel Spreadsheets to Open in Different Windows

November 1, 2008 - 10:21am

As many of you know, when you open multiple Excel Spreadsheets, they have a tendency to open in the same window, so if you have multiple monitors, you cannot have each spreadsheet on a different monitor, because they are in the same window.  Of course, you can always open Excel on both monitors, and then position the spreadsheets in their own window within Excel, but that is not the best way.

One way to force Excel to open in different windows is to use the Send to submenu when you right-click of the file name.  To add Excel to the Send to menu, just go to C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo and add a shortcut to Excel.  Then, instead of opening the file, just right-click on the Excel spreadsheet and select Send to, and then click on Excel.

The End of iTunes? Of Course Not

October 4, 2008 - 10:24am

I was interviewed by JR Davis of Fox 24/51 Wednesday about the iTunes “emergency” that could have happened on Thursday.

The Copyright Royalty Board wanted to raise the fee from $.09 per song to $.15 per song sold in the iTunes Store.  Apple said the increase could cut into profitability, and iTunes is meant to be a profitable part of Apple, so… they might be forced to quit selling music online.  Apple is the number one music retailer in the world, responsible for 70% of all music sold online.

Well, of course, they gave into Apple, and did not raise the royalty rate.

So, if Apple is selling songs for at least $.99 each, what is $.15?  Well, besides the fee Apple pays to the Copyright Royalty Board, they also pay a staggering $.70 per song to the record labels.  Do the math, and you can see that would be a big chunk of change to eat.

Share a Single Mouse and Keyboard Across Computers

September 27, 2008 - 10:44am

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Imagine this:  You have set your laptop up next to your desktop monitor to use both computers.  Normally, you would have to switch back and forth between the desktop keyboard and mouse to the laptop keyboard and mouse, and, if you are like me, you find yourself typing on the desktop keyboard thinking that you are on the laptop, Synergy fixes this.

Just move the mouse over to the laptop, and the keyboard goes with it.  Seamlessly.
